剧情讲述拥有超音速能力的索尼克被迫放弃自己的故乡莫比乌斯逃到地球。十年后，一直秘密地生活的索尼克被绿丘镇警察汤姆·沃卓斯基（Tom Wachowski）发现后，与他联手阻止想要利用自己力量的疯狂科学家艾格曼·罗伯尼克博士（后来的蛋头博士）。电影是该系列的第一部电影，于2020年2月14日在美国院在线映。

《索尼克》原定于2019年11月8日上映[1]，但由于观众对第一支预告片中的索尼克的设计非常反感，为了重新设计因此上映日期被延后到2020年2月14日[2][3][4]。上映后，虽然获得褒贬不一的评价，但票房却取得了成功，成为2020年全球票房第六高的电影[5]。

在第一部电影取得成功后，派拉蒙影业于2020年5月确认正在制作续集，杰夫·福勒、帕特里克·凯西（英语：Patrick Casey (writer)）和乔许·米勒（英语：Worm Miller）回归制作[6]。尼尔·H·莫瑞兹、托比·阿舍尔（Toby Ascher）、中原亨（Toru Nakahara）回归制片，此前他们曾与伊藤武志（Takeshi Ito）共同制作第一部电影，而蒂姆·米勒、里见治（Hajime Satomi）和里见治纪（Haruki Satomi）则担任执行制片人[6]。第一部电影的大部分演员以及配音员都回归出演各自的角色，伊德瑞斯·艾尔巴声演新角色纳克鲁斯[7]。拍摄于2021年3月在温哥华开始进行[8]。电影于2022年4月5日举行全球首映[9]，随后于4月8日在美国院在线映[10]。

于《索尼克3》片尾片段出现的艾咪·萝丝（英语：Amy Rose）和金属索尼克（英语：Metal Sonic）有望出现于电影之中[23]。
