亂世佳人》連續25年保持著票房最高的電影記錄,並且經通貨膨脹調整後,其票房收入超過其他所有電影

電影透過多個管道產生收入,例如影院放映、家庭媒體、電視廣播版權和文化衍生品等。不過,影院票房收入是行業出版物評估電影成功的主要指標,主要是因為影院數據相較於光碟等家庭媒體和廣播版權銷售數據更便於獲取,也與歷史慣例有關。本表中列出了按名目收入和實際收入排名的票房收入最高電影的列表、各年的最高收入電影列表、展示最高票房電影記錄變遷的時間軸,以及票房收入最高的電影系列的列表。所有列表均按國際影院票房表現排名,儘可能排除來自家庭媒體、廣播版權和文化衍生品的收入。

《阿凡達》以超過29億美元的全球票房收入被譽為「票房最高」電影,但這種說法通常僅指影院收入,並未考慮家庭媒體和電視收入,而這些收入往往占電影總收入的很大一部分。若將家庭娛樂收入納入考量,哪部電影最成功就不那麼顯而易見了。《鐵達尼號》從錄影和DVD銷售及租賃中獲得了12億美元的收入[1],外加影院收入22億美元。雖然《阿凡達》的完整銷售數據不可得,但在北美銷售了1600萬張DVD和藍光光碟[2],收入達3.45億美元,最終在全球售出了3000萬張DVD和藍光光碟[3]。考慮到這些家庭媒體收入後,兩部電影的總收入均超過了30億美元。電視廣播版權也顯著增加了電影的收入,截至2010年,一部電影通常會透過兩次電視播放賺取相當於其影院票房收入的20%至25%,再加上按次付費的收入[4];《鐵達尼號》從NBCHBO的廣播版權中獲得了額外5500萬美元[1],相當於其北美票房收入的約9%。

經通貨膨脹調整後票房最高的電影

世界各地的通貨膨脹率各不相同,使得通貨膨脹調整變得複雜

由於長期通貨膨脹的影響,尤其是電影票價的顯著上漲,未經過通貨膨脹調整的榜單往往更加偏向於後期上映的電影[21]。雖然這種未調整的榜單在媒體報導中較為常見,但由於不同年代的電影在經濟環境和票價上存在巨大差異,因此並不適用於跨時代的電影比較。許多早期電影雖然在商業上取得了巨大成功,但由於未調整票價的榜單未考慮價格增長因素,很難出現在現代電影的票房排名中[22]。為彌補貨幣貶值的影響,一些榜單會進行通貨膨脹調整,但即使如此,這種方法仍無法完全解決問題,因為電影票價的變動並不總是與通貨膨脹率同步。例如,1970年電影票價為1.55美元,相當於按2004年通貨膨脹調整後的6.68美元;而到了1980年,票價上漲至2.69美元,按2004年價格調整後反而下降到了5.50美元[23]。此外,各國電影票價的漲幅不同,使得全球總票房的通貨膨脹調整更加複雜[21]

另一個影響因素是電影的多种放映格式,不同格式的票價各不相同。例如,《阿凡達》不僅以2D版本上映,還提供了3DIMAX版本:該片近三分之二的票房來自3D放映,平均票價為10美元,而約六分之一的票房來自IMAX放映,平均票價超過14.50美元,相比之下,2010年2D電影的平均票價僅為7.61美元[24]。此外,社會和經濟因素也會影響觀眾購票數量,例如人口變化[25]、國際市場的擴張[26][27][28],以及觀眾群體的差異。某些電影在兒童票價較低的市場表現更好,而另一些電影則在票價較高的大城市更受歡迎[22]

目前衡量電影成功的標準仍然基於未調整的總票房收入,主要是因為電影行業的傳統做法:影院將票房收入報告給發行方,發行方再向媒體公布[29]。若改用基於票房銷量(即觀影人次)而非票房總收入的統計方式,將面臨諸多問題,因為較早期電影的數據通常只有票房收入,而沒有具體的售票數量[25]。此外,電影行業主要關注當前上映的電影,因此未調整的票房數據更符合市場行銷需求,使得新上映的大片更容易進入高票房排名,被宣傳為「史上最賣座電影」[23][30]。由於營銷和新聞報導的需求,行業缺乏動力轉向更具代表性的分析方式[29]

儘管通貨膨脹調整存在固有困難,但是仍有許多嘗試。調整後的估算結果取決於用於計算的物價指數[30]匯率轉換方式,這些因素都會影響最終的排名。1939年首映的《亂世佳人》通常被認為是最成功的電影,金氏世界紀錄在2014年估算其調整後的全球票房收入為34億美元。關於《亂世佳人》的調整後總票房,各方估算存在較大差異:其版權持有方透納娛樂公司在2007年估算其調整後票房為33億美元,略低于吉尼斯的估算[31];其他估算結果則略有不同,其中一項2010年的估算將其調整後票房定在略低於30億美元[32],而另一項2006年的估算則給出了38億美元的數字[33]。最接近《亂世佳人》的競爭對手因數據來源不同而有所不同。金氏世界紀錄將《阿凡達》列為第二名,調整後票房為30億美元,而其他估算則認為《鐵達尼號》更接近,其首輪全球票房在2010年調整後約為29億美元[32]

《亂世佳人》的調整後總票房包括其原始上映收入和截至1998年的重映收入,這些數據基于吉尼斯設定的基準年份進行調整。此外,其2019年的票房收入[36]基於2020年指數進行調整。2020年代該片曾進行幾次小規模重映,但這些重映的票房收入未計入調整後的總票房。

《阿凡達》的調整後總票房包括其原始上映及四次重映的收入。其中,原始上映和2010年特別版的票房收入是基于吉尼斯設定的基準年份進行調整,而2020年和2021年的票房收入依據2021年指數調整,2022年的票房收入則依據2022年指數調整[37]

CICinerama公司的票房數字代表的是總收入。由於Cinerama擁有影院,因此這些電影沒有租金費用,意味著電影公司從票房中獲得了100%的收入,而不像大多數其他電影,發行商通常只能獲得不到一半的票房收入。因此,《綜藝》當時為了根據美國和加拿大的租金收入對電影進行排名,構建了Cinerama電影的假設租金數字,以便與其他電影進行比較:就該片而言,全球5000萬美元的票房被重新計算為美國租金票房1250萬美元,這正是Cinerama報告的金額的25%,因此《綜藝》似乎將該數字減半以估算美國份額,再減半得到租金收入的估算值[62]。五部Cinerama電影總共獲得了1.2億美元的全球票房收入[63]

自《一個國家的誕生》於1915年成為最高票房電影以來,至少有11部電影曾保持這一紀錄。《一個國家的誕生》和《亂世佳人》分別連續保持該紀錄長達25年,而史蒂芬·史匹柏和詹姆斯·卡麥隆執導的電影各三次奪得最高票房紀錄。史匹柏是第一位打破自己票房紀錄的導演,《侏羅紀公園》的票房超越了《E.T.》,而卡梅隆則在《阿凡達》打破《鐵達尼號》的紀錄時實現了相同的成就。2019年,《復仇者聯盟:終局之戰》成為最高票房電影時,也成為首部打破票房紀錄的續集電影,同時終結了史匹柏與卡梅隆長達36年的統治地位,直到2021年《阿凡達》憑藉重映重新奪回票房冠軍。

票房最高電影系列

在2000年之前,全球票房超過10億美元的電影系列僅有七個:《詹姆士·龐德》系列[98]《星際大戰》系列[99]《法櫃奇兵》系列[100]、《洛基》系列[101][102][103]《蝙蝠俠》系列[104]《侏羅紀公園》系列[105]《星際爭霸戰》系列[106]。進入21世紀後,這一數字已超過一百個[107]。這某種程度上歸因於通貨膨脹和市場增長,但更重要的原因是好萊塢採用了「特許經銷權」(franchise)模式,即改編自知名文學作品或現成的經典角色等已有品牌認知度的電影。這種方法基於這樣一個理念:與觀眾熟悉的內容相關的電影更容易進行市場推廣,因此在業內被稱為「預售」(pre-sold)電影[108]

Keats claimed the picture cost $4 million to make and that it earned twice that much within twenty years. The production cost estimate is probably correct. Hughes worked on the picture for over two years, shooting it first as a silent and then as a talkie. Lewis Milestone said that in between Hughes experimented with shooting it in color as well. But Variety's earnings report must be the fabrication of a delirious publicity agent, and Keats' the working of a myth maker. During the seven years it was in United Artists distribution, Hell's Angels grossed $1.6 million in the domestic market, of which Hughes' share was $1.2 million. Whatever the foreign gross was, it seems unlikely that it was great enough to earn a profit for the picture.
